Rydal Penrhos School

Boarding life » Houses and houseparents

Many of the boarding houses at Rydal Penrhos School started their existence as large Victorian or Edwardian residences in the fashionable seaside resort of Colwyn Bay. As a result, each has a very distinctive character, and a strong sense of being ‘home from home’. Each house has its dedicated team of houseparents supported by tutors, and there is a wide range of weekend boarding activities, as well as inter-house competitions involving day and boarding pupils throughout the year. The school operates a vertical boarding system, where pupils from different ages live together in a house, fostering a sense of real family living.

The school has always enjoyed its reputation for boarding, and we work hard to sustain the standard of accommodation and to develop a full programme of boarders’ activities.

The need to balance the many benefits of communal living with the need for ‘private space’ is sympathetically acknowledged. Experienced houseparents provide solid pastoral care and act as a crucial communication channel between the parents, the pupils and the teaching staff.

Weekly boarding is an increasingly popular option, not just with junior boarders (age 7), but the Sixth form boarders, too.
