A day in the life of a boarder
by Annabelle Harrison, Amica Morris and Roz Hunter, Year 10
At the early time of 7am we get out of our warm beds and drag our zombie like bodies in to action, pulling on our school uniform, brushing our teeth and hair, we prepare ourselves for the day ahead. Once we’re all ready, our small group of friends heads down the hill for breakfast in the Dining Hall where on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday we have a continental breakfast including mini baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolates, as well as toast, cereal and yogurt. The option of fruit is also available. And on a Tuesday and Thursday we have an English breakfast with scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, fried eggs, beans and tomatoes, you can also have tea, coffee, juices and milk every day.
Once we’ve finished breakfast we head off to registration in our form rooms at 8:25am. Once we’ve registered on most days we go down to Chapel, but on occasion we have either form period, house assembly or lower school assembly. Our school houses are Morgan (blue), Wesley (red), Payne (yellow) and Osborne (green).
After Chapel lessons commence at 9am and continue till 5:10pm on Monday to Thursday and end at 4:35pm on a Friday, with 2 breaks in the day and lunch at 1pm till 2pm and 1pm till 2:20pm on a Friday. Our most exciting day is Wednesday as after lunch we have our activities till 5:10pm, these can range from hockey, netball and rugby to jazz band, amnesty or a nice relax at the Grange where you can play table tennis, pool, table football or just finish off some prep.
Once school has finished, as a boarder, you can ether stay at school until dinner or walk to the boarding house and get changed. Dinner is at 5:45pm and once you’ve finished there you head off up to your boarding house to start prep at 7pm. Prep for us finishes at 8.30pm and after that you are free to use the kitchen and common room and to invite people over from other boarding houses. We can also visit other boarding houses, or just go to our bedrooms to relax and chat to friends.
Bed times in our boarding house range, as we have girls from Year 7 all the way up to Sixth form, but for us in Year 10 our bed time is 10:15pm, although we actually have to be in our rooms at 10pm.
In general life as a boarder is pretty great and we enjoy it, getting to spend time with your friends and meeting people who you will feel close to for the rest of your life. You make friends that you will trust with everything and we’re all really glad we’re boarders.
