Rydal Penrhos School

School life

It is far better to achieve than be noticed…

We consider pastoral care to be at the heart of the school’s approach to the pupil as an individual. Alongside every member of the school, whether a boarder or a day pupil, is a team of staff supporting and encouraging him or her to succeed and develop their abilities and interests.

At the heart of our pastoral care is the Tutor System. Everyone in the school belongs to one of four Houses (Morgan, Osborn, Payne and Wesley) and each pupil is a member of a tutor group. This consists of about twelve pupils and the form tutor meets the group formally in a timetabled period once a week as well as registering them twice each day. Each boarding house has its own team of housemaster or mistress, matron and assistant housemaster or mistress to provide care and support to the boarders before and after the school day.

Each tutor in Years 7 and 8 is part of the Lower School team and is led by the Head of Lower School, Miss Ffion Lloyd Jones, tutors in Year 9, 10 and 11 are part of the Middle School led by Miss Susan Ashworth and Sixth form is led by Mr Peter Lavery. The role of the Heads of School is to co-ordinate information about each pupil, work with parents and staff to resolve difficulties or problems as they arise, and ensure that the pupils under their care are making good progress.

A system of tutor cards (interim reports by teachers) enables regular monitoring of academic progress, so that good work can be commended, and any problems can be identified and addressed. Tutor cards, often with a self-assessment, are also seen by the Headmaster and the Deputy Heads. A tutor will get to know tutees well and will encourage their wider interests and participation in extra-curricular activities, and the cultural and sporting life of the school.

Our boarding provision is inspected every three years by CSSIW (Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales) and the latest inspection report, in March 2013, can be found opposite.
