Sixth form pupils explore Buddhism

Pupils studying Religious Studies at A-Level visited the Manchester Buddhist Centre as part of their studies on Tuesday (17 January 2012).

Accompanied by Reverend Sissons, the pupils were met by Ratnaguna who acted as the groups’ guide for the day.

After removing their shoes, the group were led to the Shrine Room where a discussion about the significance of the Buddhist practice of meditation took place before pupils carried out a short ‘Stilling’ exercise. The exercise resulted in various responses ranging from a feeling of deep calm to an acute awareness of how hard it was to concentrate or get comfortable.

The afternoon session began with an opportunity to learn about the Sangha, the Buddhist community from Ratnaguna, followed by the chance to ask questions about Buddhism in general. Ratnaguna answered the questions with gentle wisdom and humour and pupils finished the day with a better and deeper understanding of the religion to continue their studies.

Religious Studies is one of the many options available for Sixth form pupils to study at Rydal Penrhos School. Along with two academic routes, the International Baccalaureate and A-Levels, Rydal Penrhos also puts great emphasis on equipping Sixth form pupils with ‘skills for life’ preparing them for University or their future career.
