Rydal Penrhos School

First win of the season for football team

The 1st XI recorded their first win of the season against Rhyl Town Football Club’s Academy team.

A superb early strike from range, following Kenny Cheng’s run gave the 1st XI the lead. Excellent football was played by both teams, with quick passing and good movement off the ball. The Rhyl Academy side hit the bar twice and Gleb Shakavets had to make some fine saves.

In the second half the 1st XI had to absorb a lot of pressure, eventually leading to a goal from the Rhyl side evening the score line. The final 20 minutes of the game saw Joe Maguire play in goal make a number of fantastic saves. A run by Divine Shanganya put him into space to put the 1st XI back in the lead.

Rydal Penrhos continued the pressure with opportunities for further goals with one-on-one situations against the Rhyl goal keeper.

A draw would have been fair on both teams but the Rydal Penrhos 1st XI 2-1 win was due to the superb work of the back four, Harrison Holmes, Andy Welden, Jeff Ngai and Marinus Kolbinger.

The match was officiated by Mr Petch who refereed the Welsh Cup Final in 2011, providing the teams with good experiences of a top class referee.

Man of the Match goes to Andy Welden, who flung his body at the ball time and again to stop the ball reaching the Rydal Penrhos goal.
