Year 7 learn about Sikhism

Pupils in Year 7 visited the Manchester Central Gurdwara recently to learn more Sikhism as part of their Religious Studies curriculum.

After removing their shoes, washing their hands and covering their heads with a bandana, pupils were allowed to enter the Gurdwara. Accompanied by two Sikh guides, the pupils spent the morning learning about Sikhism before entering the main hall and listening to some traditional Sikh music.

The pupils were then invited to the Langar, where food is served to all visitors for free. Vegetarian food is served so that everyone, regardless of their dietary restrictions can eat as equals, and the pupils tucked into a meal of potato curry and chapattis.

Religious Studies is taught from Year 7 through to GCSE and A-Level, the subject aims to challenge pupils’ beliefs and to help them to understand life in the 21st century.
