Tightly fought Fives competition at Shrewsbury

Rydal Penrhos enjoyed a competitive fixture against Shrewsbury School in a tightly fought group of games.

The pair of Shaswath Ganapathi and Sam Merrick had a tough fixture against a highly rated top pair at Shrewsbury. After a tight first set, Rydal Penrhos went one set up but this surged a Shrewsbury come back and Rydal Penrhos then lost the second set. In the decider, Shrewsbury took an early lead and looked as if they were going to close the set until a late surge from the Rydal Penrhos pair brought a close finish to the game. However, it was the Shrewsbury pair who were able to win the match after a closely fought finish to the final set.

In the other two games, Rydal Penrhos were the dominant team, winning both games comfortably. Pair two consisting of Daniel Phillips and Tom Cotterell, won their match 3-0 and showed an impressive display of aggressive fives.

Adam Sabri and Jack Sissons playing as pair three had a tighter game and after failing to start well in the first game, they found themselves 1-0 down. However, a much improved performance in the next three games ensured they won the deciding game to win the overall fixture against Shrewsbury 2-1.

Overall, the Rydal Penrhos team performed well but need to improve on certain aspects of their game if they’re to compete at the highest level.
