Pupils begin DofE Bronze Award
Pupils from Wesley house took part in a Duke of Edinburgh Training Expedition on 21 and 22 January 2012 as they continue to work towards the Bronze Award.
To achieve the Bronze Level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, participants must complete four sections (Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition). To complete the Expedition section, pupils were required to plan, train for and complete a two day and expedition as a team.
Mr Proudlove took Bronze participants Tom Lawton, Jeevan Selvamani, Angharad Grindal, Jodi Anchors, Alexa Rowlands and Anjalina Mitra out for their training weekend in some challenging weather conditions in order to cover navigation, food preparation, camp craft, risk awareness and emergency procedures in the Moel Rhiwen and Parc Drysgol area.
The team navigated to a small sheep fold where they prepared their camp and evening meal and completed a night navigation exercise, before a micro-navigation task the following day around Llyn Padarn.
Following the expedition Mr Proudlove said, “The group were exceptionally positive throughout despite adverse weather conditions and learnt a significant amount about life in the Welsh hills! They are now in a very good position to continue the other sections of their Award and their qualifying expedition and complete the Bronze level before the end of the academic year – over to you guys!”
Pupils can begin to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award from the age of 14. The Award encourages pupils to try new things, while also making new friends and helping the local community through the volunteering section. Mr Proudlove organises the Award within the School and holds a ‘Drop-in-Clinic’ during Friday lunchtime for pupils to discuss their Award.
