Boarders take on ‘Masterchef’ challenge

On Sunday 29 January, the Boarding House Master Chef competition was held. There were entrants from Netherton, Beecholme and 2 teams from Edwards. There was also a late entrant form Hathaway when, on Friday afternoon, George Sturla asked if he could take part if he did his own shopping because he did not want to let Mr Mather down.

The task was to make an item which reflected the culture of the pupils taking part but was also suitable to be served at the Community Tea Party which Mrs Teal organises, with the help of pupils, on the last Sunday of each month.

Sam Huang and Anton Shubka from Beecholme planned to make a Victoria Sandwich although on the day Sam and Nicky Hui worked together.

I was not too sure whose culture the boys were representing but Victoria Sandwich filled with strawberries was very suitable for the tea. The lightness of the sponge and neatness of the decoration was much admired by the elderly ladies present.

Jennifer Cheung, Landy Chan and Jessie Cheng from Edwards made Macau Puddings and their patience and care to present neatly layered desserts was a lesson to us all.

There was great rivalry between the other girls from Edwards and the boys from Netherton as both dishes were based on apples.

Nienke Nobel and Nicole Livon made a Dutch Apple Cake and the team of boys, including Max Abt, Hendrik Schabsky and Harry Collins made an Apple and Cheese with Crumble Topping Cake.

George Sturla made the only savoury dish – Smoked Salmon Blini. He used his initiative when unsure about something by taking the ‘phone a friend option’! In this case his friend was his Mum!

The adjudication had to take into account who had given in shopping lists and methods, whether the dish chosen matched the task and how well the teams worked together. The latter was difficult since all teams did exceptionally well.

At this point, mention must be made of Gabby Towler from Edwards who, although not a competitor, was an enormous help, especially at the tea party.

The final part of judging any competition of this sort is, of course, how the food looks and tastes. All products gained more than one vote but the winner was unanimous.

Add to this that the entrants has complied well with all other aspects of the judging criteria, the winning team were the boys from Netherton with their German Apple and Cheese Crumble Cake. Congratulations to Max, Hendrik and Harry.

The Dutch Apple cake came second so well done to Nienke and Nicole also.
