This year’s event was held in slightly different circumstances with all four races (Intermediate and Junior Boys’ and Girls’ events) being run on the same afternoon on Wednesday 1 February. The four races had staggered starts with each race completing a lap of the Paddock before completing laps of the larger loop which took in the incline to the corner of the field below the Headmaster’s house, the Oak tree, across the Plateau, down by Erskine stores and back onto the Paddock. The Inter boys completed four of these laps, the Inter girls and Junior boys completed three laps and the Junior girls had to run two laps.

The day was cold but clear skiers and a light breeze made for ideal running conditions. In the Junior girls’ race, Sam Randall made all the running and led from the start. Ellie Scarff and Jenni Greenwood finished behind Sam 5 and 13 seconds respectively behind the winner from Osborn.

In the Junior boys’ race, Henry Davies and Matthew Trumper led from the start and built up a commanding lead. Thomas McCloskey finished over a minute behind the winner, Henry, in third place with Matthew outsprinted on the run-in, finishing 3 seconds behind Wesley’s winning runner.

The Inter girls’ race was a 1,2,3 for Wesley House with Jodhi Anchors (third) and Jemelia Bentouri (second) trailing the excellent performance of Seren Kerfoot-Robson who, in keeping with both Junior race winners, won the event as a younger age group participant in the two year age categories. The first three places were spread comfortably apart with the winning margin one minute 14 seconds.

Divine Shanganya and Ben Staveley (both Year 10) cruised around the first three laps with Matty Harding always in contention just behind. However, Divine proved too strong over the final lap securing first for Osborn, 14 seconds ahead of Ben who took second, 2 seconds ahead of Matt.

The races proved to be a useful precursor to the Eryri team’s North Wales qualification event.
