Rydal Penrhos School score well in national Maths competitions

Talented young mathematicians at Rydal Penrhos School have been awarded a host of awards in recent Maths competitions.

Pupils aged 13 or below took part in the Junior Maths Challenge, where a total eight certificates, including 4 Bronze and 3 Silver were secured. The highest award went to 13-year-old Sebastian Schmidt from Denbigh who was awarded a Gold certificate along with the title ‘Best in School’.

Meanwhile in the Senior Maths Challenge (open to pupils aged 16-19), eleven pupils gained an award, with Head Boy Tom Warrington earning a Gold certificate as well as the title of ‘Best in School’. A further Gold certificate was awarded to boarding pupil Ken Ngai, from Hong Kong, while the School also achieved 4 Silver and 5 Bronze certificates.

With the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) who runs the competitions estimating that the top 40% of pupils nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate, Rydal Penrhos School is delighted with the pupils’ achievements.

Finally, a team of the four best mathematicians in the Sixth form took part in the Senior Maths Team Challenge held in Chester. The team of Tom Warrington, Michelle Tan, Laura Nunez-Mulder and Nikita Bogatyrev finished in a creditable 6th position out of 14.

Mathematics is a thriving and successful subject at Rydal Penrhos School with many pupils choosing to continue study at A-level and for the International Baccalaureate in Sixth form. The enthusiastic and committed mathematics teachers aim to develop, maintain and stimulate pupils curiosity, interest and enjoyment of the subject by expanding their understanding of maths in its widest context and showing how it relates to life outside of school.
