Sing for your Christmas dinner!

The Inter House carol singing competition took place this week and with the prize of enjoying Christmas lunch first, the competition was fierce.

Kicking off proceedings was Osborn House with the classic tune “Santa Claus is coming to Town”. Orchestrated by Head of House, Mrs Brumitt the house started well with a solid sound and an amusing and quirky choreographed routine for the sixth formers whose costumes extended as far as santa hats.

Santa did come to town in the guise of head boy Tom Warrington who strode down the memorial hall with some gusto and joined in the singing very enthusiastically. The sixth form dance although surreal was entertaining, the unusual instruments added a certain je ne sais quoi, (Joel Sugarman getting special mention for the ukele playing) and the size of the orchestra was commended.

Next came Morgan house who had the difficult task of rendering “Wish it could be Christmas everyday” to the audience. Half of the house was positioned on stage at the start while the rest joined them via a procession, followed by a smaller choral group of sixth form boys.

Head of House Ms Hearn led them trying all the time to keep them in time with the backing music and the performance ended with the climactic releasing of party poppers.

Payne was the third house to perform and with the entire house on stage, or so we thought, there came the exciting entrance of the house elf, played by Andriy Levitskyy, closely followed by Head of House Mr Robson on a bicycle. This was a very solid house performance with strong singing throughout.

Highlights included a great solo by Ben Baker ( a truly difficult line to sing) and the Pullman brothers on piano and drums. A great performance.

Last was Wesley a position unfortunately that they remained in after the judging was over. With a rendition of the Band Aid tune “Do they know it’s Christmas?” it soon became clear what a difficult song this is to cover. Head of House Mr Tickner sported a great Christmas hat, half way by between a chef’s hat and a Christmas hat.

The choir struggled to raise their voices above the soundtrack but kept going until the end despite timing issues. A good try and definitely a song all the other houses will not wish to cover next year.

The final result was Payne first, Osborn second, Morgan third and Wesley fourth… the prize entry to Christmas lunch in that order!!!
