Roundup of the final rugby games of the year

A roundup of the final rugby games of the year.

Daily Mail Vase Competition

Wednesday 7 December – 1st XV v Wirral Grammar School

A poor start resulting in the visitors scoring in the first minute put the team under some pressure from the outset. The visitors had good players in important positions who punished the 1st XV for failing to control the ball and dictate play.

Their more experienced back row proved stronger in the very area where we have enjoyed some domination in earlier games and a simple but effective game plan dictated by their fly half kept us under territorial pressure throughout long periods of the game. Lack of any quality possession for lengthy periods cost us and the loss put the 1st XV out of the Daily Mail Vase competition.

Saturday 10 December – 2nd XV v St Bedes School (home)

On Saturday, the 2nd XV ended the term in some style. The visitors were below strength but some competent and pleasing individual performances set a good platform from which we established both territory and some good tactical decision making.

Late changes resulted in the ever versatile captain Nick Bellamy play scrum half out of necessity, for the first (and probably last time!), providing enough ball to Simon Kwan at fly half to get his backs into the game.
The team as a whole played with purpose and adequate control to score tries through Harry Ormerod, Joe Hughes, Nicholas Bellamy and Matthew Leung and then two each to Oliver Sharples and Ashley Jones.
Although several players played particularly well special mention must be given to Thomas Kirby and Aaron Robinson for playing very well in their first full game of the season, as did Boris Starchenko who made some bullish runs, Andriy Levitskyy for some excellent defensive tackling and Max Schieffer for some good runs on the wing.

The final score was 52 – 12.

Saturday 10 December – U15 v St Bedes (away)

The Under 15 team used the last match of the season to show their attacking skills against a combative opposition. Tries from Ronnie Mueller, Morgan Jones and Felix Fritz were unfortunately matched by three tries from St Bedes. The first half was looking to be a draw until a second try by Ronnie Mueller gave Rydal Penrhos the advantage going into the break.

The second half started with Rydal Penrhos failing to cleanly take a kick off which resulted in St Bedes opening the scoring. Thankfully this woke the pack up resulting in much more go forward ball. Second half tries from Morgan Jones, Divine Shanganya, Sean Lonsdale and a third for Ronnie Muller gave the team a healthy margin. The game finished with Rydal Penrhos gaining their second victory of the season with a score of 51-36.
