Outdoor Education Autumn Term 2011

The autumn term saw pupils try out many new activities during their Outdoor Education lessons, with each session giving pupils the opportunity to participate in leader and leaderless tasks, personal courage, selfless commitment, integrity and disciple.

During a 7 week period, pupils experienced:

• A mountain journey, including first aid elements, improvised lifts, carries and stretchers. This session also included a casualty evacuation exercise.

• Coasteering, Anglesey myths and legends and marine environment information.

• Mountain journey, covering ML abseil techniques.

• Cwm Idwal, environmental session and the Ogwen squeeze challenge.

• A visit to the Dinorwig Slate Quarries. Pupils explored the history of slate mining while also investigating different routes around the quarry.

• A dry gorge walk during which pupils participated in leader and leaderless tasks.

• A trip to River Ogwen. The construction and application of a Tyrolean traverse over moving water were studied as well as many leader and leaderless tasks carried out.

• Wrysgan underground mine journey. The trip included information on the history of mining and the afternoon included leaderless tasks and integrity tasks.

The varied lessons provided pupils with lots of new experiences, while also allowing pupils to develop and increase their confidence in the outdoors.
