Sixth form pupils attend Global Forum

Fourteen Sixth form pupils from Rydal Penrhos School travelled to Liverpool University last week to join other students from around the country at the Global Student Forum.

The conference focused on maternal mortality with speakers from global organisations including Christian Aid and the Institute of Economic Affairs discussing the significant on-going health problems in the developing world.

Throughout the day pupils attended various lectures and seminars on the subject of maternal health. Pupils were asked to think about the psychological, social and economic impact on families and communities when mothers die and the barriers that exist for improving maternal health.

On their return to School, the fourteen attendees began planning and organising a variety of workshops for the younger pupils, with the aim of making others aware of the problems in the wider world. The workshops will focus on turning ‘what people can do’ into a proactive approach of ‘what people will do’.

The conference is one of many extra-curricular activities in which Sixth form pupils can participate. The School puts great emphasis on equipping pupils with ‘skills for life’ that will enhance their future education and careers. Many opportunities exist for pupils to develop enhanced leadership qualities throughout their time in the Sixth form and become involved in various committees including the Charity Committee which helps raise money for various good causes throughout the year.
