Pupils tackle Duke of Edinburgh Hut Camp in Snowdonia
The weekend started off with nine enthusiastic participants accompanied by Mrs Margerison checking their equipment and doing some last minute re-packing before setting off on a weekend of adventure as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award.
The group’s journey was to take them over moorland, round slate quarries, through deep forests, bogs and over hills offering spectacular birds eye views of the surrounding hillside.
Arriving at the drop-off point around midday, the sun broke out to encourage the group up the first steep climb from the road. Once the top of Moel Smytho had been reached, a breathtaking view of where the following day’s hike would take the group was revealed.
To reach the night’s accommodation, the group navigated through the dense, slippery forests. Arriving at the bunk house, the pupils divvied up the beds and massaged their feet back to life, before tucking in to a dinner of roast chicken or steak. The evening was spent planning for the next day, with route cards, bearings and timings planned until it was time for some well earned rest!
After being greeted with the smell of bacon, beans and pancakes, the group were ready to set off on their second day. The day began with a steep climb and the team navigating to the summit of Foel Goch where the full brunt of northerly breeze was felt. Lunch was eaten huddled in the survival shelter which the group had carried with them, taking in the breathtaking views.
The group navigated their way down the valley into Llanberis and to the waiting bus. A quick stop to stock up on sweets was allowed before returning to Colwyn Bay for hot showers and home comforts.
