Conservation for the nation!
On Wednesday 16th November Mr Matthews, Miss Teal and Miss Hughes took Tiger Chen, Ken Ngai, Lily Rae, Ellen Carnegie Wuster, Laura Nunez-Mulder, Jaime Chan, Annabel Large, and Natalia Holgate to Yr Ty Hyll (The Ugly House) in Capel Curig. As part of World Community Action the group were required to spend the afternoon doing some conservation work to the woodland surrounding the house.
There is speculation over the exact date of the building of the house but it is believed to be around the mid 19th century. In 1988 the house became derelict so the Snowdonia Society bought and restored the house.
To maintain the houses’ 5 acres of land also owned by the Snowdonia Society, our very willing and enthusiastic 6th form students were put hard to work. They began the afternoon by digging up a box hedge, pulling out the roots and shifting the debris to the compost. We then all had to clear the paths around the garden, turning soil and getting it ready for the shale paving. By the end of the day everyone had done a great job and thoroughly enjoyed working outdoors and learning about all the different species of plants and wildlife around the garden.
The group will be carrying more work for the Snowdonia Society on 7 December, when they will be working on a conservation project to help preserve the National Park.
Sixth form pupils at Rydal Penrhos School are encouraged to get involved with projects such as conservation work in order to develop a wider skill set and to increase leadership qualities while also enhancing CVs and boosting university applications.
