Biology pupils examine DNA during class trip
Pupils studying Biology at Rydal Penrhos School experienced some of the complex techniques involved in forensic science during a class trip to the Nowgen Centre in Manchester.
The Sixth form pupils took part in the ‘Hands-on’ Molecular Genetics Workshop course at the Centre, which is involved in genetic research and works closely with schools to help integrate genetic medicine into everyday learning.
Doing exactly as the course title suggests, pupils were hands-on throughout the day, learning how to extract DNA from their own cheek cells followed by trying to identify their own genotype for a specific gene.
The pupils used a range of techniques involving Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Gel Electrophoresis to reveal their own genetic profile. As well as gaining an insight into the world of medical research, interesting discussions took place regarding careers available within the field, at a time where pupils are considering their future education and career options.
