1st XV put out strong performance for Daily Mail Vase Competition
Daily Mail Vase Competition
1st XV v St Anslem’s (away)
The 1st XV performed exceptionally well during the Daily Mail Vase game versus St Anselm’s.
A solid start, so important in any sport, saw the 1st XV leading the game, 14-6 at the end of the first quarter with tries from Dion Jones and Sean Kitchen. St Anslem’s responded with a try 10 minutes later only to have Rhodri Mayor, playing out of position, respond with another try just before half time. With Dion kicking all three conversions this put the 1st XV ahead by 21-13 at the interval.
The second half began with St Anselm’s rallying and scoring a converted try to get them back into the game 21-20. Despite long periods of defending our own try line, Dion kicked a penalty. A break out saw the 1st XV maintain possession of the ball, allowing Dion a run on the left to run through three defenders to score and convert under the posts.
The home team salvaged a converted try to get within four points with five minutes to go but the resolute defence of the 1st XV was more than adequate to hold on to win the game.
