GCSE pupils exceed their grade expectations

Year 11 pupils at Rydal Penrhos School have matched the success of the school’s Sixth form, whose A-level results were published last week. The percentage of candidates who scored the all-important A*-C grades rose to 92.6%, and just over 50% of those were A* and A grades, an increase of 7% on last year’s result. The year group scored an average of 9 A*-C passes, and the excellent results are a credit to the hard work and the ability of all the pupils in the year.

Impressively, no fewer than 11 candidates scored all A* and A grades: Tom Warrington scored 10 A*s and 1 A, Eleanor Murphy scored 9 A*s and 1 A, and Nicholas Bellamy achieved 8 A*s and 3 As, while Freya Cassia, Nicole Clerk, Bethan Davies, Catherine Davies, Amelia Dunton, Sophie Elliott, Helen Farquharson, Eleanor Murphy and Amy Yu also collected only the top two grades overall.

The school also offers a Pre-Sixth form 1-year GCSE programme for overseas pupils, and of the 11 candidates in this group, 8 scored 5 passes at A*-C, which is a great achievement after just one year’s study.

Many subjects achieved a 100% A*-C success rate, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Drama, History, Latin, Textiles and Welsh. The Headmaster, Patrick Lee-Browne congratulated the pupils on their results: ‘This has been a real team effort: the pupils and their teachers have worked well together to ensure that they have learned and understood the great range of subject knowledge and skills required in up to 12 different subjects. And we should also acknowledge the great investment of time and effort that the parents have made in motivating and stimulating them to do their best. Across the spectrum of results our pupils have achieved results to be proud of, and the school is certainly very proud of them. They should already be aiming to beat the records set by the Upper Sixth last week, when their A-level results are published in 2 years’ time!’
