Rydal Penrhos on Top of Bench
Four potential chemists from Rydal Penrhos School recently took part in “Top of the Bench”, a national competition run by the Royal Society for Chemistry for 14-16 year old pupils with an interest and aptitude in chemistry.
The team consisted of two pupils from year 9, Matthew Thomas and Sion Morris, one pupil from year 10, Jack Braund, and one year 11 pupil, Tom Warrington. The competition was held at Bangor University and schools from across North Wales were invited to take part. It involved a short test of factual chemical knowledge and a practical chemical problem solving team exercise. For all you budding chemists out there one question was “What is the chemical structure of ethanoic acid?” it turns out this is vinegar and the structure is CH3COOH. Or “Who found the law of octaves?” The answer was Newlands.
The Rydal Penrhos team did exceptionally well and were awarded glass trophies for coming second.
