Entry into years 7-11 (age 11-15)

Pupils seeking admission into years 7 to 11 are expected to sit our entrance examinations.

The purpose of the entrance examination is to ensure that all prospective pupils seeking a place at the school will benefit from the curriculum on offer at Rydal Penrhos School.

The school offers a number of scholarships/bursaries for high achievers in a number of areas. Please click here for full information.

All candidates for entry into Year 7 sit three papers: Literacy, Numeracy and Non-Verbal Reasoning. In addition, they will meet with a member of staff for an informal discussion, and their current school will be asked to provide a satisfactory reference and academic report. Scholarship/Bursary candidates will be required to sit two additional exam papers.

Success in this examination qualifies a candidate for entry to Rydal Penrhos.

We also accept late applications for entry into Year 7 – 11 throughout the year, subject to availability. In these circumstances, candidates will still be required to sit the entrance examination.

Entry into the Sixth form (age 16)

Applications for entry into the Sixth form will be accepted throughout the year. An offer of a place in the Sixth form will usually be conditional on the candidate achieving at least five GCSE passes at Grade C or above. However, experience shows that to make a success of the Sixth form, pupils should ideally achieve a B grade or higher in the subjects they plan to study at A or IB level.

Candidates will be expected to meet with a member of staff for an informal interview and will be asked to produce a satisfactory school report and a school reference.

The admissions process

Step one – registration
The first step is to complete the registration form and return it to us. Please refer to the relevant downloads on the right of this page. Registration is at a cost of £75.

Step two – register for entrance exam and submit applications for bursaries and scholarships
Awards are only available to pupils coming into Year 7, Year 9 and the Sixth form.

Applications for all awards need to be submitted to us by Friday 11 November before the entrance examinations later that month. We encourage you to apply as early as possible as the number of awards is limited and competition is strong. Please note that bursaries and scholarships are only available to pupils new to Rydal Penrhos School. Pupils at our Preparatory school are also eligible.

Step three – taking the entrance examination (for years 7-11 only)
The entrance examinations are held every year late January. No special preparation is required for the exam as it is designed for pupils following the National Curriculum.

Applications for the Sixth form are accepted throughout the year, although applications for bursaries and scholarships must be made by Friday 11 November.

To apply for a financial award, Sixth form candidates take examinations at the school in two subjects of their choice, identifying a third reserve subject.

Candidates applying for a Practical Bursary (Art, Drama, Music or Sport) will in addition attend, by separate appointment, practical sessions during which their proficiency in their chosen area is assessed.

Step four – offer of a place
Once a pupil’s academic performance has been assessed an offer of a place can be made.
