International Baccalaureate » Pre-Sixth
Rydal Penrhos School offers a one-year course to overseas pupils aged 15 or 16 to prepare them for the International Baccalaureate in the Sixth form.
Pupils study subjects from the GCSE course in a broad range of disciplines alongside pupils in years 10 and 11 (ages 14-16). The proposed pre-IB curriculum and planned examination programme for 2010/11 is as follows:
4 lessons of Maths (IGCSE Maths)
6 lessons of Science integrated with Year 10 (GCSE Science)
6 lessons of activities and PE integrated with Year 11
1 lesson of Personal Health & Social Education integrated with Year 11
3 lessons of French/Latin (GCSE French/Latin)
3 lessons of Art or ICT (Short course GCSE)
6 lessons of History (GCSE)
2 lessons of German
6 lessons of English (IGCSE English)
Pupils receiving support from either the Learning Support or the English as a Foreign Language Departments may experience a reduced GCE programme.
Most GCEs contain a mixture of supervised course work or practical work, modular examinations and terminal papers at the end of the Upper Sixth. Modules take place in January of the Lower and Upper Sixth as well as in the summer months in both years. Attendance in school, throughout scheduled term dates is, therefore, essential.
In August 2010, of the 11 candidates in the Pre-IB group, 8 scored 5 passes at A*-C, which is a great achievement after just one year’s study.
