Mathematics ยป Courses

GCSE: All pupils take GCSE Mathematics either via a linear or modular course, using the Edexcel examination board. Typically, top sets are accelerated to GCSE early, and then tackle the more demanding Additional Mathematics course, in order to better prepare for Sixth form courses.

IGCSE: A slightly more demanding alternative to GCSE, usually offered as a one year course for pupils coming into Year 11.

Additional Mathematics: A one year course for accelerated pupils, which provides a more thorough and rigorous preparation for Sixth form study of mathematics.

AS/A-level: Many pupils opt for AS/A -level Mathematics, where two core mathematics modules and one application module are taken in the Lower Sixth.

A-level: A popular choice, where a further two core mathematics modules and another application module are taken in the Upper Sixth to make up the full A-level.

Further Mathematics A-level: Pupils complete the A-level course in the Lower Sixth and then go on to take the Further Mathematics A-level in the Upper Sixth.

International Baccalaureate: Three courses are on offer; two at Standard Level and one at Higher Level.

  • Mathematical Studies (SL): A course designed for pupils whose mathematical ability is not strong, or for those who will not need knowledge of advanced mathmetical techniques at university and beyond.
  • Mathematics Standard Level (SL): A more demanding course designed for pupils with good mathematical skills, comprising most of the A-level topics.
  • Mathematics Higher Level (HL): A demanding course for the able mathematician with a very keen interest in the subject, who may be progressing on to a mathematics related course at university.
