Design Technology
The Design Technology Department at Rydal Penrhos School is a lively, stimulating environment in which pupils learn and develop an array of techniques in design and crafts. It is a far-reaching subject and encompasses and hones skills in areas such as problem solving, effective written and verbal expression, drawing, ICT and mathematics. Pupils are also encouraged to discuss and debate in class important economic, environmental and social issues relating to the subject.
Why study Design Technology?
This is perhaps one of the most apt and all-embracing subjects on offer at the school. Nothing which we use has been unaffected by man – the production and use of resources is one of the main themes of the course. The course itself is based on the problem-solving approach; the solution is realised in its entirety , as a model or in graphical format.
Design Technology can lead into a wide range of rewarding degree courses such as architecture, civil engineering, computer design, education/teaching/college or university lecturing, electrical engineering, industrial design, mechanical engineering and product design. All of these professions are ideally suited to the person who wants a creative, imaginative and technically challenging career.
Throughout the school pupils create projects using various materials, which they are able to take home. Past projects have included designing and making musical instruments, furniture, radios, clocks, lamps, and many more. They must first envisage a product, then create detailed plans and specifications before proceeding with their final design. Design Technology is much more than just sawing a piece of wood, although that in itself is an invaluable skill!
