Design Technology

The Design and Technology (DT) Department at Rydal Penrhos School is a lively, stimulating environment where pupils learn and develop an array of design techniques. Throughout their time in the school pupils create projects using various materials, which they are able to take home. Past projects have included designing and making robots, musical instruments, furniture, radios, clocks, lamps, and many others. Pupils are also set technical challenges to solve as a team.

Why study Design Technology?

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. It actively promotes the creativity and well-being of pupils, and it teaches them how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Pupils develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and technology on daily life and the wider world. Additionally, DT provides excellent opportunities for pupils to develop and apply value judgements of an aesthetic, economic and technical nature both in their own design work and when evaluating the work of others. It is perhaps one of the most all-embracing subjects on offer at the school. The production and use of resources is one of the main themes of the course, and the course itself is based on a problem-solving approach; the solution is realised in its entirety, as a product.

Studying DT can lead on to a wide range of rewarding degree courses such as architecture, engineering, computer design, education/teaching/college or university lecturing, industrial design and product design. All of these professions are ideally suited to the person who wants a creative, imaginative and technically challenging career with excellent prospects.

Resources

The department houses its own IT suite, equipped with the latest hardware and specialist software. Added to the huge range of workshop tools and machines, the department has a welding bay, equipment for casting and forging and ‘CNC’ machines including a CNC Router, Laser cutter and 3D printer.

The DT Department runs several extra-curricular activities, including F24 (Electric Car Racing), Vex Robots and a jewellery club.

Design Technology courses

All pupils have DT lessons in Years 7, 8 and 9. They then have the option to take DT as a GCSE and an A-level subject. In recent years the DT Department has been particularly successful and has gained national recognition and won numerous awards for innovation.
